Teach Yourself to Crochet

The most common question I am asked is how to learn to crochet. While I wish I could sit down with each and every person that asks and teach them, that is impossible. But what I can do, is tell you how to teach yourself.

First off you will need:
Hooks (I suggest these for getting started)

Pretty easy list huh?

Next you need to find a good YouTube channel.
This is the channel I used a few years ago when I taught myself to crochet.
I suggest starting with a hat. This will teach you basic stitches, as well as how to crochet in the round.

Once you have made a few hats, are starting to feel more confident in what you are doing and are ready to move into something else I would suggest moving on to something a little more difficult. Maybe a blanket with a couple more stitches.

After doing those two things I wanted to move on to patterns. However it seems really intimidating. This is when I got Crocheting For Dummies, and it was a game changer. I highly suggest getting this book and reading it. I never read the whole thing, just enough to clear a few things up. I still use the book if there is a stitch I don't know (YouTube is great for that as well), or something in a pattern I don't understand.

It took me a year to become confident in my ability to crochet, and I took lots of breaks. It can be frustrating and overwhelming at times but keep going! You can do it, and you will be super proud when you can say you taught yourself!
